A strong advocate of the natural organic on her lifestyle website Goop, 41-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow does not take the soft approach when it comes to her skincare routine.

While she does steer clear of cosmetic surgery, the mother of two admitted to Hello! Magazine that she frequently undergoes the painful Thermage laser treatment to rejuvenate her skin and display a healthy radiant glow.

“It’s non-invasive, but it’s quite painful, like having your face smacked with a rubber band that has an electric shock in it,” Paltrow explained to Hello! Magazine. “But it works.”

“I try to have a facial every two weeks,” the actress commented to Elle magazine. “I go to Sonya Dakar in California. She’s brilliant and absolutely mad! I go for hardcore squeezing, peeling, microdermabrasion and lasers – the works.”

Also known as the face ironing treatment, the Thermage laser treatment helps tighten and smooth the skin’s top layer by plumping up the lower layers. The treatment aims to boost levels of collagen in the skin’s lower layers to create a tightening effect.

Unlike lasers and tools like the Dermaroller, Thermage aims to boost collagen levels in the skin’s lower levels and not the top level by using radio waves that trigger collagen production.

The expensive procedure comes with three cost options, full face for about 6600 dollars, half face for about 4900 or just the eyes for 3200.

The treatment, which works similarly to a microwave oven, has serious potential side effects like facial burns and scarring.

Another skin rejuvenating technique, microdermabrasion is a less painful, light cosmetic treatment that mechanically exfoliates to gently remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the epidermis.
