Scientists Identify Skin Development Gene

Just recently, a gene known as CTIP2, or the "Master Regulator" of Skin Formation, has been identified by scientists. The potential consequences of this discovery are enormous, as the CTIP2 gene could very well enable doctors to more effectively treat some of our most common, and most damaging skin problems. The gene has thus been dubbed the “Master Regulator” for skin development, thanks to its incredible and expansive possibilities concerning the future of skin care.

What is the "Master Regulator"?

CTIP2, or the "Master Regulator," is known as a transcription factor, which is a protein that binds to DNA and regulates its expression. In other words, CTIP2 helps determine the function of certain types of cells in our bodies, like skin cells. This "Master Regulator" gene was previously known for its working role in our immune and nervous systems, and even for its ability to grow new tooth enamel. Now, researchers at Oregon State University are saying CTIP2 can add skin development and skin formation to its list of feats.

CTIP2 is said to have a direct effect on if, and how, we develop certain skin disorders and skin diseases. OSU researchers are saying that in the absence or inadequacy of this gene, issues in skin formation can result, including psoriasis, eczema and wrinkles.

OSU researcher, Arup Indra said that this gene "helps control different levels of skin development, including the final phase of a protective barrier formation," which can help to guard skin against harmful toxins and bacteria. This gene could also be instrumental in preventing aging skin symptoms and skin disorders because it assists with "lipid biosynthesis," which encourages skin cell turnover and regeneration.

What Could This Mean for Future Skin Care Patients?

While the full effect and power of this "Master Regulator" on our individual skin conditions isn't completely understood or explained yet, it's easy to note many skin issues that would benefit from improvements in skin formation. There is currently a flood of cosmetic products and treatments, designed to help psoriasis and eczema, that could either become obsolete or be drastically changed by this gene research.

Acne could also be significantly reduced or eliminated with further development of CTIP2. Aside from hormonal causes, many people experience acne because of poor cell turnover at the skin's surface, which leads to clogged pores and trapped oil and bacteria inside skin tissue.
