From Lotions to Butter: Knowing Your Moisturizers

Moisturizers come in all different versions. There are lotions, creams, butters etc. So how do you know what to buy? When trying to decide on a moisturizer it depends on where you plan to use it, when you plan to use it and what your current skin condition is.

Facial Moisturizers:
When you are in the market for a new facial moisturizer, make sure you are buying a moisturizer that really is for your face. Facial moisturizers are usually lighter and less oily than other forms of lotion. Most lotions for the face also include an SPF of 15 or more to help protect the skin from damaging UV rays. Facial moisturizers are important for all skin types and should be used all year round.

Body Creams:
Body creams are thick and provide great overall moisture to the skin. Creams are wonderful for very dry, non-oily skin. If you have oily skin you will probably want to find a lighter all over moisturizer so you don't add oil unnecessarily to your body.

Sunscreen Moisturizer combinations:
These products are wonderful, but are usually only thought of during the summer months. The truth is that we are exposed to UV rays year round, so finding a great moisturizer that is for your entire body that also contains an SPF of 15 or more is a great way to go.

Body butter:
Body butter is very indulgent just as the name would suggest. This product is very thick and is not something you would want to use daily. Once a week and particularly during the dry winter months should do the trick with this product.

Tinted moisturizers:
Tinted moisturizers have become very popular in recent years. These products gradually darken the skin tone due to the inclusion of self tanning products within the moisturizer. The darkening effects are subtle, but do exist. These products are particularly great for people who want a sun kissed glow without spending time in the sun. Tinted moisturizers are available as both facial moisturizers and as all over body moisturizers.

When it comes to moisturizers, the choices are pretty endless, but like most things you do get what you pay for. Finding the right lotion for you and your skin is important too. Just because a moisturizer works great for your friend it might not be the best one for your skin type. Trying a few different moisturizers to see what works best, meaning keeps your skin fully hydrated without being oily, involves a little trial and error. However, once you find a product that works for you, all you need to do is use it regularly to ensure healthy looking hydrated skin.
