Can Sleeping in Makeup Damage Skin?
Makeup can be a girl's best friend: it covers up imperfections, enhances your features, and above all is totally fun to play with. If those smoky eyes don't look quite right, you can always wipe them off and start over again. Foundation too heavy? Just wash it off. Makeup can be applied and removed as you please, but if you forget to remove it at the end of the night, you might just pay for it the next morning. Sleeping in Your Makeup
Everyone knows that sleep is incredibly important to your health, but did you know that it's also the key to great skin? "The most important thing you can do for your skin may be getting a great night's sleep," according to Dr. Howard Murad. During your sleep cycle, your skin rebuilds itself from any of the environmental or physical stress it may have incurred throughout the day. That's why after a good night's sleep, you may notice that your skin has a glowing quality to it-- it had plenty of time to heal. Your skin is also more receptive while you sleep, which makes it an ideal time to apply moisturizers, serums, and medications. So if you do happen to fall asleep with your makeup on, know that you're depriving your skin of some serious quality time.
Makeup and Acne
Makeup, at one of its most basic functions, creates the illusion of skin that's even-toned and clear. It covers up redness, active acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and even large pores. But makeup can actually exacerbate acne. One of the key components of clear skin is good circulation-- it allows the skin to breathe in oxygen, and breathe out toxins. Without proper circulation, bacteria can get trapped inside of the skin and fester, causing breakouts. Acne can also contain pore-clogging ingredients that lead to acne. Always look for makeup labeled non-comedogenic, which means it won't clog your pores.
If you accidentally fall asleep with your makeup on, there are some things you can do the next morning to ease the pain. First, cleanse your face thoroughly. If you have time, steam it or take a long, hot shower to open up your pores. Afterward, apply acne medication to anywhere you feel a breakout coming on. Don't forget to moisturize, because sleeping with makeup on can dehydrate your skin. Leaving makeup on your skin overnight won't directly cause wrinkles. But it can make your skin more susceptible to wrinkles by drying it out. Mature skin has the tendency to dry out, and leftover foundation, powder, and blush can suck any of your skin's existing moisture out. Wrinkles are caused by muscle contractions far beneath the skin, but tend to show up more visibly on dry skin.
