A recent survey by L’Oreal Paris revealed that women worry about the size of their pores.

The survey of nearly 2,000 women showed that about 45 percent wish to change the size of their pores. Nearly a third claimed they’re more worried about pore size than wrinkles.

However, the normal concern can grow into full-blown fixation, coined “porexia.” Josh Zeichner, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, commented that the obsession becomes porexia if your concern with the way your pores look interferes with your daily life or distracts your attention from your everyday tasks.

Another sign of porexia is causing damage to your skin by excessively using exfoliating tools like harsh scrubs, home microdermabrasion kits and other acidic products.

“It takes about two weeks for a baby skin cell to make it from the bottom layer to the surface of your skin,” Zeichner explained. “It’s not necessary to use products like these any more often than one or two times per week.”

Zeichner also commented that while pore size is determined by genetics, there are healthy ways to deal with the concern.

Collagen in your skin keeps pores tight, so protecting your face from the sun with SPF and a wide-brimmed hat prevents the protein from the sun damage that enlarges pores.

You also can’t control your oil production, but you can blot your pores with blotting paper to keep oil from setting into and clogging pores.

Microdermabrasion is a great way to treat pores if you use the treatment moderately, no more than once or twice a week. If you live in Skokie and wish to learn more about microdermabrasion, please feel free to schedule a consultation or contact one of our representatives today!
