Top 10 Skin Care Myths, Re-Examined
They say that mother knows best. She’s also the one that claims it takes seven years for chewing gum to pass through your digestive system (it takes a week, max). It’s important to have your skincare facts straight so you can spend your time and effort working toward skincare goals that are actually attainable. The following list debunks some of the most common skincare myths—and you’ll never have to tell your mother.
MYTH #1: The higher the SPF, the better the sun protection. A sunscreen’s label boasting a high SPF content doesn’t necessarily offer the most complete sun protection. There are two types of ultroviolet (UV) rays that effect humans: UVA and UVB. UVA rays are the ones that deepen your skin’s pigmentation, resulting in a suntan. UVB rays are far more dangerous and have the ability to damage a person’s DNA, cause cancerous tumors, and are also the source of photoaging. The term “SPF” is indicative of only the product’s defense against UVB rays. When shopping for sunscreen, look for products that indicate they are broad-spectrum, meaning that they protect against both UVA and UVB rays for the most complete sun defense.
MYTH #2: Only dry skin needs moisturizer. Some people will tell you that if you have normal or oily skin, moisturizer is a waste of time. But moisturizer is an essential skincare component for every skin type. Daily cleansing and environmental factors drain the skin of naturally present moisture that can be replenished by a simple product. Moreover, excessively oily and acne-prone skin can actually be overcompensating sebum production due to dried out skin. Non-acnegenic and gel formula moisturizers are easy to find and can lead to more beautiful skin.
MYTH #3: Cocoa butter prevents stretch marks. Cocoa butter is a common remedy for expectant mothers looking to avoid unsightly stretch marks on their belly and thighs. Unfortunately, stretch marks are formed when collagen under the skin breaks down. Not even a rich moisturizer like cocoa butter will help prevent stretch marks—but if you want to address the collagen issue, a new treatment called collagen induction therapy can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
MYTH #4: Shaving makes hair grow back thicker. This is one of the oldest tales in the book. Sloughing off hair at the surface level of the skin does not have any effect on the hair’s root or growth rate. However, shaving does cut the hair off in a blunt manner and leave the free edge feeling sharper than it did before. The only proven way to slow down hair growth is via laser hair removal, which permanently stops hair from growing on treated areas.
MYTH #5: Tugging at your skin while applying makeup causes wrinkles. These very short skin stretches don’t last long enough to make an impact on the elasticity of your skin. However, more repeated actions like smiling and frowning can cause wrinkles over time.
MYTH #6: Dry-brushing your skin can eliminate cellulite. Dry-brushing is a popular treatment that uses a natural bristle brush to firmly render strokes in the direction of the heart. While dry-brushing can improve circulation and act as an excellent exfoliating treatment, there’s no evidence to prove that it helps reduce the appearance of cellulite. Being darker skinned or less prone to sunburn doesn’t mean you’re immune to sun damage or skin cancer—everyone should use the same sun smarts.
MYTH #9: Makeup suffocates the skin. If this myth were true, there would be a lot more women dead due to over-application of their daily makeup. The skin is continuously nourished by oxygen and other nutrients in the blood. Wearing makeup regularly or wearing a lot of it won’t make a difference in the amount of nutrients delivered to your skin, but it may slow down the excretion and absorption of the skin. Just remember to wash your makeup off before you go to bed and to only use makeup that doesn’t irritate or break out your skin.
MYTH #10: Steam and warm water can open up pores. If it seems like your pores open up after a hot shower, it has nothing to do with the movement of your pores themselves. Pores are not moving features of the skin and cannot shrink and grow via steam. However, steam does soften the skin temporarily making pores more pliable and easier to remove dirt and oil from them.
