| Ending the Summertime Skin Blues |
Whether you work outside in the hot sun or you enjoy relaxing beach side, the one thing everyone who spends time in the sun has to worry about are sun spots. Both sun spots and age spots are caused by too much exposure to direct sunlight, however, with a little help from non-surgical skin care treatments and taking proactive measures to protect your skin, sun damage can become a thing of the past. This edition of the SignatureForum Skin Care newsletter will take a closer examination at sun spot removal and help you decide which treatment is right for you.

| IPL: Shining the Light on Sun Spots |
Sun spots are minor skin pigmentations basically like perpetual sun tans. However, when a regular sun tan fades, sun spots persist. And just as they are caused by light, sun spots can be removed with light. Intense pulsed light treatments (IPL) use light to break apart the pigmentations so they can be absorbed harmlessly back into the skin. Collagen depletion is one of factors that go into sun spot formation and IPL safely penetrates the deeper layers of skin to produce this much needed collagen.

| Microdermabrasion: The Sun Spot Blast |
Microdermabrasion treatments are possibly the safest and least expensive non-surgical treatment used for sun spots. Microdermabrasion uses a blast of crystals to both remove the outer layer of skin and stimulate collagen production (which will help sun spots fade). While not as effective as IPL treatments, Microdermabrasions are a good place to start, especially for minor cases of sun spots.

| Chemical Peels: There’s No Appeal to Sun Spots |
Chemical peels are a little more intense than Microdermabrasions. While much better at removing dead skin, chemical peels will not produce collagen. This makes chemical peels best suited for removing only minor skin pigmentations.

| Fraxel: The Future of Sun Spot Removal |
Fraxel, or fractional laser resurfacing, is probably the best method to remove sun spots. The laser is more intense than IPL, but at the same time very safe, requiring little down time. Fraxel is considerably more expensive than IPL, but the results are most often, worth it. More intense laser skin resurfacing and laser peels can also eliminate sun spots, however, these treatments will require significant down time.
