General Description

Regardless of how proactive you are with your skincare regimen, premature wrinkles can be an inevitable part of life. If you’re dealing with forehead creases, or that stubborn "chasm" between the eyebrows, but feel surgery is a too extreme for you…BOTOX® Cosmetic is a proven (not to mention extremely popular) non-surgical wrinkle treatment.

Wrinkles on the face are the result of our muscles repeatedly contracting whenever we express emotion (smiling, frowning, etc.). When BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected; it relaxes these facial muscles, decreasing the pull they have on the skin’s surface, thus smoothing the wrinkles of the glabella (between your eyebrows), forehead, and eyes.

Botox® Cosmetic’s active skin smoothing agent is a refined botulism toxin. While this agent is undeniably a toxin, in small doses it is FDA approved and considered safe for wrinkle treatment. It much less invasive than a surgical facelift, not to mention less expensive

Ideal Candidates: BOTOX® Cosmetic is not highly effective for patients who are beyond the stages of premature aging. Most patients who experience extremely successful Botox treatments are between the ages of 27-48. If you’re lines are deeper and your skin has lost its elasticity, there are still non-surgical options available to you. You may want to consider non-surgical facelift procedures like Thermage, Threadlift, and Titan.

Side Effects:

The side effects of BOTOX® are generally not serious.  It is possible to experience a mild headache after the injections, and you may experience light bruising around the injection site, but this is temporary and will usually disappear in 3-7 days.

Providers need to be careful when administering BOTOX® around the mouth as it relaxes facial muscles and can cause numbness and decreased control, resulting in drooling or slurred speech.  This is not to say that these areas can't be treated, but every provider is different, and some choose to not use BOTOX® around the mouth. You will need to check the qualifications of your provider before going through with treatment.

Risks:

Potential risks include muscle tightness, drooping of eyelids.

Duration of Results:

Usually 3-6 months. Can last up to 8, depending on the individual.

Many people wonder what happens when the botulism toxin begins to wear off.  After about 8 months, the wrinkles will eventually reappear; however, they will often be less severe than before treatment.  You will find (and clinical studies will attest) that after several BOTOX® treatments, you will require follow up treatments less often.

Recovery:

There is no recovery time necessary with BOTOX® treatments.  You will be able to perform all of your normal duties the same day as your injection.  If you do experience light bruising, it can easily be concealed with makeup (men, you're not as lucky, but you can say it is a battle wound!).

If you experience a headache, it can be treated with an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Insurance:

Since BOTOX® is considered a cosmetic treatment, insurance usually does not apply.  However, many people are using BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and migraine headaches.  You may want to contact your healthcare provider to determine if treatment would be covered for these conditions.

Discomfort Level:

Virtually none for most people; may be slight discomfort at the injection site.

Anesthesia:

A topical numbing cream can be applied at the injection site.
