Dark under eye circles can be a nuisance, but they can be successfully treated with a number of non-invasive aesthetic treatments.
Fraxel®—Laser Skin Resurfacing techniques such as Fraxel or other fractional lasers have proven effective at eliminating puffiness around the eyes. Fraxel’s laser triggers the body to produce new skin cells and collagen causing the skin around the eye to become noticeably smoother.
Thermage®—Thermage is known as the non-surgical facelift and can visibly reduce dark under eye circles. Thermage uses radio frequencies to gently warm the skin and causes collagen to rise to the surface. This collagen will tighten skin around the eyes and get rid of those dark eye circles.
Blue Light Therapy—Best known as an acne treatment, Blue Light Therapy can also be of help with dark bags under the eyes. Blue Light Therapy increases cellular activity in skin. It increases elastin proteins, which your skin uses to fight the signs of aging and reduce circles under the eye.
IPL Photofacial—Photofacial, like Fraxel and Thermage, increases collagen production to reduce bags under the eyes. Photofacial uses intense pulsed light, and while it may not be as effective as Fraxel or Thermage, it is by far the safest light-based treatment for under eye circles.Restylane® and Radiesse®—Dermal Fillers such as Restylane or Radiesse can remove dark circles under the eyes by filling in the hollow portions beneath the lower eyelids, or by filling out areas of puffiness around the eyes. By creating smoother skin, dermal fillers remove the shadows that cause the unsightly dark circles from developing. Besides Restylane, other dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid like Juvederm or Perlane can also get rid of dark circles under the eyes.
Chemical Peels—Chemical Peels have also been used to renew skin around the eyes, but are being used less and less to treat dark under eye circles because of the availability of laser treatments.
The most common treatment most people use for dark under eye circles is to simply cover them up. Covering circles under the eyes with makeup, however, can often make matters worse. Some makeup can dry out or irritate the delicate area around the eye. So, before you liberally apply concealer, know that there are advanced non-surgical treatments that are far more effective at treating dark under eye circles.
Dark under eye circles, also known as bags, are caused by broken blood vessels within the lower eyelid. A shadow forms underneath the bag causing the dark circles to appear. These dark circles can bring about a chronically fatigued look, or make you appear older than you actually are. Causes of dark circles under the eyes range from fatigue, vitamin deficiency, hyperpigmentation, allergies, age, and medical conditions. However, heredity is the most common cause for bags under the eye. Getting the proper rest and eating the right foods can sometimes help treat and improve dark under eye circles, but if your circles are in fact, genetic, they will usually worsen if left untreated.
Today, there are plenty of non-surgical methods available to get rid of dark circles under eyes. In fact, everyone probably knows someone that has tried tea bags or cucumbers. Green tea does actually contain an anti-inflammatory substance called EGCG that can reduce puffiness, but the amount of EGCG is so small in most teas that it might not be worth it. For years beauty queens have even used Preparation H as a temporary fix for eye wrinkles and dark circles, but it’s just that...a temporary fix. Home remedies for dark under eye circles are mostly ineffective because they are not powerful enough to alter skin's chemistry. The best treatments for under eye circles are non-surgical aesthetic treatments such as Fraxel®, Thermage®, Blue Light Therapy, IPL Photofacial, Dermal Fillers like Restylane® or Radiesse®, and Chemical Peels. Patients with more severe cases of undereye circles, puffiness and loose upper or lower eyelids may want to seek out surgical altneratives including Blepharoplasty or a Brow Lift.
Results typically last a year with dark under eye circle treatments. Results may be longer with services like Radiesse with results lasting as long as 5 years.
Bags, under eye wrinkles, under eye puffiness
"Service is excellent. Recovery time was very quick, 48 hours. Creams provided work very well with skin, makes my complexion softer. I am very glad that I was able to have the creams to help with the after care. Under eyes feel smoother, softer, tighter right away. Per advice from Dr. Ourian and Rana, the filler procedure will help to finalize my under eye bag issue, which I have already made an appt. for."
