It’s hard to determine why facial veins occur, but certain areas of the face often become reddish and unsightly. Visible facial veins can be a sign of sun-damaged skin or of a larger skin problem like rosacea. Facial veins are rarely connected to a major medical problem, but they can be linked to liver disease, so if facial veins form it’s best to get examined by a qualified physician. Facial veins most often affect the nose, neck, forehead, eyelids, cheeks and upper chest. The two types of facial veins most often treated are the smaller facial spider veins and the larger reticular veins.

Types of Facial Veins

Facial spider veins are very fine irregular red lines that are reminiscent of a spider’s web in shape. Spider veins are those facial veins that appear around the nose and cheeks. Reticular veins have a greenish blue tint and are much larger than spider veins, often 2-3 mm in diameter. Reticular veins are usually found along your cheekbones, under your eyes, and around your temples.

Facial Vein Removal Options

Luckily, while these facial veins do carry blood, they’re not part of the venous valve system, so facial veins can be removed without any worry of harming yourself. The main facial vein treatments are Sclerotherapy and laser vein treatments. These are permanent solutions to your facial veins, once a particular vessel has been destroyed, it will never return. Although, these treatments do not prevent future facial vein development. If you’re prone to facial veins, getting rid of them could be an ongoing struggle, but at least there’s help.

Laser Treatment for Facial Veins – Lasers and light based treatments are the best solution for those smaller facial spider veins. All laser procedures for facial veins basically work behind the same principle. The lasers energy is absorbed by red blood vessels, but not the surrounding tissue. The heat generated burns the capillaries, which are destroyed and your body absorbs the remains. Your laser options include laser skin rejuvenation and IPL Photofacial. Laser Skin Resurfacing and Fraxel® lasers are more powerful options; you should meet with a laser specialist to find out which one is right for you.

Sclerotherapy – Sclerotherapy is a better option for large reticular facial veins. Originally developed 150 years ago, Sclerotherapy uses injections of a sclerosing (hardening) agent to dissolve and eliminate facial spider veins. Much like in the laser vein treatments, Sclerotherapy causes the blood vessels to coagulate, which breaks down the veins over time. Sclerotherapy on the face should only be performed by a qualified vein physician.
