An Overview

One of the most popular and reputable options among injectable dermal fillers, Restylane is made from cross-linked chains of hyaluronic acid, a regenerative substance that occurs naturally in the human body and promotes the volume and elasticity of the skin. FDA approved and non-animal derived, Restylane is now widely available in America after years of success in Europe and Australia.

When a person gets older, their natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases (much like collagen), causing the onset of lines and wrinkles in the skin. An injection of Restylane revitalizes these areas by introducing a clear gel called NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) into the subdermal facial tissues. This substance works in perfect compatibility with your existing hyaluronic acid, while also maintaining its functionality by binding with surrounding water molecules. As a result, injected areas of the skin will appear fuller, with greater smoothness and volume over a longer period of time.

Because of its unique capabilities as a non-surgical option for wrinkle removal, Restylane is used to treat a wide array of imperfections, including nasolabial folds (“smile lines”), melomental folds (“crows feet”), forehead wrinkles, lip wrinkles, dark under eye circles, scarring, and other hollow areas of the face.

The treatment perhaps most associated with Restylane, however, is lip augmentation. Like other dermal fillers, Restylane injections can plump up and add volume to the lips, making it a popular alternative to established lip augmentation techniques like alloderm implants.

A typical Restylane treatment will rarely last longer than 30 minutes, depending on the extent of the area being treated, and the recovery time is very quick, allowing you to return to your normal, daily activities within the same day as the procedure. Follow-up treatments are often necessary, especially in the case of lip augmentation, but most results will last from 6 to 8 months and sometimes up to a full year.

How Long Does this Procedure Take?

Restylane can take as little as 30 minutes to perform.

Restylane Side Effects:

Side effects of Restylane are rare but are similar to the side effects of any dermal filler.  They include redness at the injection site, temporary numbness, bruising, and swelling.

Length of Restylane Results:

As with other dermal fillers, Restylane results are immediate and usually last around 6-12 months. Less with lip augmentation.

Restylane Recovery Time:

Restylane requires no downtime. Any bruising can be covered with makeup and should subside within 3-7 days.

Can Insurance Cover Restylane?

Due to the cosmetic nature of Restylane, it is not covered by insurance.

Will I feel pain or discomfort after treatment?

Little discomfort if any.
