Sculptra®

An Overview

Sculptra is a long-lasting injectable dermal filler which is great for removing wrinkles, increasing volume in hollow areas and tightening loose skin. It is considered to be an excellent non-invasive alternative to procedures like facelifts, since Sculptra reverses the signs of aging. The injectable’s results reveal themselves gradually, usually over a period of about ten months, and can last up to four years. This makes Sculptra the longest-lasting dermal filler commonly offered by doctors and medspas.

Sculptra was recently approved by the FDA for use in the United States, though it was originally developed in 1999 and has been popular in Europe since then. Similar to procedures like Juvederm and Restylane, Sculptra helps to increase collagen production, a substance naturally produced by the body to help fill out wrinkles and improve the skin’s fullness, texture, and elasticity. The active ingredient in Sculptra, poly-L-lactic acid, is a bio-degradable, synthetic polymer that has been used in medicine for over 25 years with consistently safe results. Sculptra can also be combined with other non-invasive procedures, like Laser Skin Rejuvenation and Microdermabrasion, for even more dramatic results.

The actual treatment usually takes less than 30 minutes, depending on how many injections you want and which area(s) of the body you’re looking to treat. You may experience some swelling in the treated area at first. However, this is simply the result of the water which is used to dilute Sculptra, and will be absorbed by the body within a few days. For the next couple months you may not see a noticeable difference in your skin, but this is normal - it can take up to four months for the results to start revealing themselves, and up to 10 months for the full results to be seen. For some, the gradual change can make treatment less overwhelming and even ideal if you’re not trying to showcase the fact that you’ve had an anti-aging procedure. Additionally, the fact that Sculptra results last an average of two years or more usually makes up for the cost and delayed results.

Sculptra is especially effective on the wrinkles around the mouth, such as nasolabial folds (the folds between the nose and mouth) and marionette lines (the folds around the corners of the mouth). However, it is also effective for filling out sunken cheeks, making bags under the eyes less prominent, and removing wrinkles and fine lines on other areas of the face. Like most injectable dermal fillers, multiple treatments are recommended to attain the full results. And, of course, it’s important to find a reputable provider to make sure that Sculptra injections are performed safely and effectively for you.
