Stretch marks, or striae, are the scarring lines that form in the skin as a result of a rapid and considerable size or weight gain, such as that experienced during puberty, pregnancy, bodybuilding, steroid use, or the onset of obesity. These sudden alterations of the body compromise the elasticity of the skin, leaving stretch marks in vulnerable areas like the hips, breasts, buttocks, abdomen, and thighs.

Once you've decided to explore stretch mark removal, there are a number of options at your disposal. Most common among them are microdermabrasion, topical cream, laser stretch mark removal, and surgical removal. In many instances, a clinic will offer a combined treatment of microdermabrasion and laser removal.

Microdermabrasion: Highly effective on fine lines and more manageable stretch marks, microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin with an aluminum oxide spray. Generally, this treatment doesn't pack the punch to eliminate deeper wrinkles and heavy scarring, but it works brilliantly on lower end cases, while also offering one of the safest methods available for striae removal.

Topical Cream: : Available at med spas or in conjunction with a microdermabrasion treatment, topical creams can be quite successful in smoothing out recently developed stretch marks, minimizing their length and depth. Some of the more popular stretch mark removal brands include StriVectin®, Zenmed® Stretta, and Trilastin®.

Laser Treatments: : There are two primary types of laser stretch mark removal-- laser skin resurfacing and laser skin rejuvenation. In laser skin resurfacing, the outermost layer of the epidermis is removed, encouraging new cell growth and filling in even highly developed stretch marks. Laser skin rejuvenation uses a Cool Touch™ laser to delve beneath the skin and jumpstart new collagen production. Because no layer of skin is removed, laser skin rejuvenation tends to be a simpler, relatively painless procedure compared to laser skin resurfacing, but it's also typically less effective in removing stubborn stretch marks. In truth, neither laser can be expected to fully or permanently remove all stretch marks.
