Acne plagues most people at some point in their lives— a recent study showed that 85% of teenagers suffered from a form of acne, and that doesn’t account for people who develop adult acne later. The abundance of acne treatments available both over the counter and through dermatologists has made acne largely treatable for many, but it’s not so easy for people who suffer from severe, chronic acne.

It wouldn’t appear that the beautiful Cassandra Bankson knows how that might feel. The 19-year old model from California appeared on Good Morning America looking confident and fresh-faced. But the reason Bankson had come to the show was actually to speak about her ability to apply makeup in just the right way, camouflaging a severe acne problem. Bankson had become a YouTube sensation, thanks to her video showing viewers how she completed the routine.

The video, which has over two million hits, first shows Bankson talking to the camera with makeup on. It looks natural, light, and pretty. Bankson then shows herself completely void of makeup—and the difference is quite stark. She reveals irritated skin all over her face, even on the computer’s low-quality camera. Bankson then speaks to the camera, telling listeners that appearing makeupless is a huge step for her. Her shaky voice reflects her anxiety. But then Bankson sets into her extensive routine involving two primers, concealer, foundation, three different powders, and a spray. (See the video and more details below)

Makeup is great for covering up blemishes, but as most women know, it can also worsen acne. If you’re prone to oiliness, blackheads, or breakouts, stick to makeup that’s labeled oil-free and non-comedogenic, meaning that it won’t clog pores. Even supposedly non-acnegenic makeup can lead to acne, however. In order to identify when a product may be breaking you out, only introduce one new product at a time to your routine. If your skin doesn’t experience problems for a couple of weeks, it’s probably safe to use. And always remember to thoroughly cleanse your skin of makeup at the end of the day, so that your skin can go into repair mode while you sleep.

On Good Morning America, Bankson talks about more than just her makeup routine. She also explains her heartfelt struggle with acne. Bankson is obviously a cosmetic guru, and it’s likely that she uses plenty of anti-acne products on a daily basis. Beyond over the counter products, there are some major skincare steps that you can take to clear acne.

  • Blue Light Therapy: A top choice for acne sufferers, blue light therapy uses a certain wavelength of light (about 400 nanometers) that kills bacteria on contact. Bacteria is one of the main culprits of acne and a buildup of bacteria can lead to breakouts on the T-zone, around the mouth, and even down the neck. Over a series of sessions, the results of blue light therapy are shown to be even more effective than oral antibiotics.
  • IPL Photofacial: This advanced facial uses pulsed light to stimulate collagen growth under the skin, which is ideal for rejuvenating the skin and healing acne scarring. The IPL Photofacial can help existing acne by improving the skin’s overall texture, but is especially ideal for adults or people who are still dealing with the after-effects of acne.
  • Laser Skin Rejuvenation: Like the IPL Photofacial, laser skin rejuvenation is an excellent acne scar treatment. It also treats existing acne by subduing oil glands and promoting oxygen circulation.
  • Chemical Peel: Chemical peels are a popular option for acne sufferers due to their efficiency and affordability. During a chemical peel, a medical-grade chemical exfoliant is applied to the skin and left on for a few minutes. Lactic acid, glycolic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acid are commonly used in chemical peels to renew fresh underlying skin.
