Cosmelan Depigmentation Review
by Trudi Schrieber

Hyperpigmentation, or melasma, is a frustrating skin problem for many men and women. Melasma is an area of excessive pigmentation (sometimes called brown spots or age spots), often occurring in areas of the skin exposed to the sun. Doctors have not been able to definitely pinpoint what causes melasma, but it seems that it may be directly tied to hormones in women. Factors that have been tied to melasma in women include oral contraceptives, pregnancy, thyroid dysfunction, cosmetic use, and sun exposure. In men, it is less clear what causes melasma.
The Treatment
Cosmelan Depigmentation is a new treatment used to reduce the appearance of melasma used for individuals with pigmentation problems that are particularly persistent or resistant to other treatments. The Cosmelan treatment targets the excessive pigmentation, and inhibits the essential enzyme in the melanin formation process—tyrosinase. Therefore, the treatment acts in a preventative nature, by inhibiting the continued production of melanin. The melasma skin cells become sloughed off, and the skin’s coloration becomes smoothed out.
Process
The Cosmelan Depigmentation process occurs in two parts. The first step takes place in your doctor’s office, where your physician or skincare specialist will cleanse your face with a solution that will eliminate oil and allow the Cosmelan cream to penetrate the skin. Your physician will then apply a thick layer of Cosmelan mask, which remains on the skin for several hours, depending on your skin type. The second phase of the Cosmelan Depigmentation treatment occurs at home. You will be responsible for following a process of Cosmelan cream application and heavy sunscreen use for the following three weeks.
Results
Patients who follow the prescribed program diligently, see results within a week of the initial mask application. It is very important to follow the instructions of your doctor and continue the Cosmelan treatment at home in order to see results. Additionally, you will need to protect your skin from sun exposure at all times with sunblock to achieve the full benefits of Cosmelan Depigmentation. Individuals will need to keep up with the treatments in order to maintain results, as Cosmelan Depigmentation is not a permanent solution after one treatment. Sun exposure will encourage the production of melanin in the melasma, so it is key to always protect the skin from UV rays following Cosmelan Depigmentation.
Those who have undergone Cosmelan Depigmentation have reported positive results. The procedure really does eliminate brown spots from the face, making them invisible or extremely faint. Patients report increased confidence following the procedure, and women note that they feel more comfortable without makeup.
Side Effects
As with any cosmetic treatment, there are some side effects associated with Cosmelan Depigmentation. Most of these subside quickly. Redness resembling sunburn, itching, and burning can occur directly following the mask treatment, but generally disappear within two days. You may also experience flaking of skin.
Cost
Cosmelan Depigmentation is reasonably priced, when compared with other cosmetic processes for melasma. The treatment package runs from $600 to $800.
