Lady Gaga’s Reparations for Sleeping in Makeup
When asked how many days a week she goes to bed with a full face of makeup, Gaga simply replied, “Seven. That is not good for your skin, but I’m blessed with good genes.”
Good genes or not, Gaga’s habits are definitely taking a toll on her 26-year old skin. The effects of daily makeup wear without removal can result in clogged pores, irritation, and premature aging. Gaga’s “good genes” may save her from acne related to sleeping in makeup, but no good can come from snoozing in makeup. That’s because during nighttime, the skin goes into rejuvenation overdrive: the cell turnover rate doubles from daytime, especially between midnight and 4 am. Count on your nightly snooze to produce collagen, destroy free radicals, and repair cell damage. Skin will go into repair mode whether you take your makeup off at night or not, but keeping products on the skin will only inhibit its automatic mechanisms.
The evening hours also facilitate better product absorption, says Alex Khadavi, M.D. and associate professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California. It’s the ideal time to slather on beneficial serums, lotions, and other products to aid your skin. But if you go to bed with your makeup on, your skin may absorb those products, too.
Tips on Removing Your Makeup at Night
It can be difficult to force yourself into scrubbing off your makeup every night. Knowing the consequences of poor makeup removal should encourage your desire remove it. You can also try:
- Keeping makeup remover wipes near your bed
- Setting an alarm on your phone to remind yourself
- Removing your makeup as soon as you get home from work or school
- Making makeup removal an integral part of your night routine, along with brushing your teeth and taking any medications

Lady Gaga does make some smart health and beauty choices. “I don't like to tan my face because it's bad for wrinkles,” says the performer. She’s got that right—ultraviolet rays are one of the main causes of premature aging in the form of wrinkles, age spots, and dull skin. Sun exposure is also directly linked to skin cancer, and even Gaga’s young skin is at risk. She told People that she also shies away from harsh hair dyes, as years of dyeing her hair platinum blonde have taken a toll on her hair and scalp. Gaga was forced to “get a chemical haircut,” which happens when hair falls out due to over-processing.
