Maria Sharapova Now Co-owns Skincare Company
From candy company founder to global brand ambassador to Olympic commentator, Maria Sharapova has a growing number of off-the-court endeavors. Her most recent? Skincare company co-owner.
The four-time Grand Slam champion will soon become the new co-owner of the skincare company Supergoop!, focused on preventing skin damage caused by sun exposure.
“I thought the idea of being an equity owner would be the next phase in my business development,” Sharapova told USA Today Sports.
Sharapova described her involvement in Supergoop! as organic since she already used the 6-year-old skincare company’s products, which are sold both online and in stores like Sephora and Nordstrom.
The tennis star commented to USA Today Sports that she wants to spread awareness about sun damage and skin cancer, widely considered the most prevalent and preventable cancer.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
“If there was a cream you could put on your body that would prevent women from having breast cancer, you can imagine how incredibly popular it would be,” Sharapova told USA Today Sports. “I think the voice that I have can be quite powerful in this category.”
The 26-year-old said that she learned the importance of using sun protection from her mother after a childhood spent mostly in sunny Florida.
Sharapova’s recent investment is only the latest in a myriad of business endeavors, including her Sugarpova candy line and a number of lucrative sponsor deals with Nike, Samsung, Porsche and Tag Heuer.
Additionally, Sharapova topped Forbes’ list as the top earning female athlete for the ninth consecutive year in 2013, with 29 million dollars, most of which came from endorsements and appearance fees.
“To date, there has not been a broad reaching voice for UV education and we’ve finally found our megaphone in Maria,” Supergoop! CEO and founder Holly Thaggard said in a statement.
After missing the second half of the 2013 season because of a right shoulder injury, Sharapova has yet to return to top form on court. She reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and lost to Serena Williams for the 15th consecutive time at the Sony Open in Miami in March, her third semifinal of 2014.
Although her ranking has slipped to its lowest point in three years, the Russian tennis player claimed that she was feeling better three months and five tournaments into her comeback after the 2013 hiatus.
“It’s a work in progress,” Sharapova told USA Today Sports. “It’s tough to expect your ranking to be that high when you miss five to six months of the season. I don’t know any other way to put it. That’s the reality.”
The Supergoop! co-owner added that she is confident in her ability to return to championship form as she did following her shoulder surgery in 2008.
“I’ve done it before,” the 2012 French Open champion told USA Today Sports.
