Snakes in the Vein: How One Woman Coped with Varicose Veins

“'Worms beneath my skin.”

That is how Pam, a mother of five, described her varicose veins, the term used for veins that have become enlarged and twisted. Unable to cope, she has finally decided to do something about it.

In spite of her success as a confident beautiful woman and mother, Pam suffered from self-confidence issues brought about by her expansive varicose veins for over a decade. Pam is now featured on the TLC documentary, “My Naked Secret,” where she seeks treatment and exposes herself to transform the look of her legs.

“I could never love my body as it is now,” Pam confessed as she revealed her legs for the first time for the TLC video cameras. “But other people don't know what I'm hiding underneath my clothes.”

Creeping Into Her Personal Life

“It stops me doing activities with children and I feel I don't look good enough for my husband,” Pam admitted to TLC.

In “My Naked Secret,” Pam exposes not only her legs but also the frustrations of living with varicose veins for over a decade.

“'I'm so tired of hiding,” Pam commented on the TLC show. “If I have to hide anymore I'm going to completely shut down. When I look in the mirror I feel really upset.”

For Pam, clothes are a form of protection and security.

“Clothes are a safety net,” she explained to TLC. “I feel off guard when I take my clothes off.”

Pam also says that one leg is profoundly worse than other.

“My problem is on my right leg,” she told TLC. “I've got really bad varicose veins. They start on the top of my thigh and finish at the top of my feet. It's really hard to look at myself in the mirror because my leg doesn't look normal.”

Despite reassurances from her husband and loves ones, Pam could not live with her varicose veins without shame. She used the imagery of worms to describe the sinuous and curvy protrusions on the back of her thigh and calf.

Surgical Solutions

“It feels like I’ve got worms in my leg,” Pam confessed to TLC.

Pam started to notice the veins after her first child. By the time of the fourth and fifth child, Pam says her legs looked gross. Stockings and ibuprofen gel simply did not work.

Upon consultation with a board certified surgeon, Pam was told she would need three different types of surgery. Her doctor warned that going without surgery could become a health hazard.

“You have quite a strange pattern of veins,” surgeon Mark Whitely explained. “None of them are coming from the leg. They are all coming from the pelvis. If you don't remove them you could end up getting a leg ulcer and clots, which can lead to infection and in rare cases blood poisoning. Pam needs the veins in her pelvis removed then two different procedures to remove the veins in her legs, the laser treatment and then injections.”

Following her procedures and a relatively short period of convalescence, Pam was overjoyed at her successful results.

“For ten years I've been trapped and now I can feel confidence wherever I am,” Pam told TLC. “I feel absolutely free. I now look forward to the future and I'm feeling confident. It's a great feeling.”
